Five years, two teams, and a transformation from deep safety to box-creator.

His first three years in Las Vegas were the prototype free safety version: 35-54 tackles, mid-single-digit PDs, single-digit TFLs. Solid, anonymous, replaceable on a bad team.

The last two years are a different player. Tackle volume nearly doubled (97 combined in 2024 to 98 in 2025), and TFLs went from 5 to 14. Moving to Carolina in 2025 unlocked a role - he's playing alley/box safety, blowing up screens and running-back swings, and crashing the LOS in ways he never did in Las Vegas.

He leads ALL DBs in tackles for loss in 2025 - 14, six more than anyone else.

14 TFLs is more than any defensive back in football this season - by six. Kyle Hamilton, the consensus best safety in the league, has 7.

The stat exists at the intersection of scheme and skill: Carolina's defense schemes him into shallow rotations, and Moehrig has the closing speed to finish. In Las Vegas he averaged 1.5 TFLs per season. In Carolina, in his first year, he has 14. That's not gradual development - that's a role change.

The LV-to-CAR move: tackle volume exploded, ball production cratered.

Comparison

Las Vegas career vs first Carolina year

CAR (2025)1660382114

Per-game tackle pace in LV: 4.18. In CAR: 6.13. A 47% jump.

Per-game PD pace in LV: 0.44. In CAR: 0.125. A 72% drop.

It's the cleanest scheme-shift case study in the 2025 season. Las Vegas used him as the deep half of a Cover 2/3 rotation - the ball-skills role. Carolina is using him as a movable run-support piece who blitzes off the edge, walks down in the box, and rotates late. Same player, completely different counting stats.

2024 was his hybrid year - and the leading indicator of the 2025 explosion.

Look at the assists column. From 18-19 in his first three years, it doubled to 40 in 2024 - the first sign that he was being deployed closer to the line.

The 2024 season was already a 5-TFL, 97-tackle workload, by far his best in Las Vegas. Carolina saw that tape, signed him as a free agent in 2025, and immediately put the role on steroids. The arc isn't 'breakout out of nowhere' - it's 'breakout that scouts saw coming a year early.'

He has 3 sacks in 2025 - more than his first four seasons combined.

Career sacks before 2025: 2. Sacks in 2025: 3 - a career-high in year five.

The broader pattern is unmissable: he's being used at the line of scrimmage. 14 TFLs, 3 sacks, doubled assist-tackle volume. The free-safety prototype Moehrig is gone. The Carolina version is a hybrid Sub-LB/dime safety, and the numbers say he's good at it.

Three straight 17-game seasons in Las Vegas - durability was always the case.

In an era when safeties miss 4-6 games per year on average, Moehrig has played 82 of a possible 85 regular-season games over five seasons.

The 2025 trade to Carolina wasn't just filling a role - it was counting on a player who keeps showing up. He's been a Week-1-to-Week-18 fixture every year of his career, and the only season he played fewer than 17 was 2022, when he still went 15. For a position that gets hit on every play, that's the most-undersold half of his value.
