Chuba Hubbard

RB · Panthers

A 4th-round pick breaking 1,000 yards is rare — most never reach it. Hubbard's 2024 peak was earned by outlasting a shaky offense that needed someone to hand the ball to, making his 2025 regression a volume story, not a talent story.

From 4th-round backup to a 1,195-yard season in year 4.

Hubbard was the No. 126 pick in 2021 — a 4th-rounder out of Oklahoma State. The career arc isn't a steady climb: it's stop-and-go. 2021 → 612 yards as a backup, 2022 → 466 in a part-time role, 2023 → 902 as the lead back, 2024 → 1,195 (his career high), and 2025 → 511 in a reduced shared backfield.

The Bryce Young development cycle hasn't helped — Carolina's run game has stalled when the passing game stalls, and 2025 has been a passing-game year.

Why it matters. A 4th-round pick breaking 1,000 yards is rare — most never reach it. Hubbard's 2024 peak was earned by outlasting a shaky offense that needed someone to hand the ball to, making his 2025 regression a volume story, not a talent story.

His 2024 EPA jump was historic — and it happened on the same volume.

In 2024 he ran 251 carries with +0.043 EPA/play and a 44.6% success rate — both elite numbers for any back. The 2023 baseline had been -0.090 EPA and 38.2% success on 238 carries (nearly identical volume).

The gap between -0.090 and +0.043 EPA is enormous in cumulative terms — about +33 expected points added over a season. That was Carolina's offense doing more than just feeding him.

Why it matters. EPA/play measures whether a rush helped the drive relative to expectation. Swinging from -0.090 to +0.043 on 250+ carries — same back, same offensive line — signals a genuine scheme or health improvement, not luck.

Inside the 5, he became a converter in 2024 — then it disappeared in 2025.

In 2024 Hubbard saw 22 carries inside the 5 — converted 7 for TDs. That's a healthy 32% conversion rate at the goal line and is the single biggest reason his TD count jumped to 10.

In 2025: 2 inside-5 carries all season through 15 games. Carolina has gone with Jonathon Brooks at the goal line (when healthy) and lighter packages. The TD column reflects it directly — 1 rushing TD in 15 games.

Why it matters. Goal-line usage is entirely a coaching decision. The collapse from 22 to 2 inside-5 carries explains nearly all of Hubbard's TD regression — his per-carry conversion rate held, he simply lost the role.

15 breakaway runs of 15+ yards in 2024 — then zero in 2025.

Hubbard had 15 carries of 15+ yards in 2024 — a 6.0% explosive-run rate, well above the league baseline (~3.5%) and his own career rate (~4%). Two of those carries went for 38 yards (W4 vs. Cincinnati and W5 at Chicago).

In 2025, the drop is total: 0 breakaway runs of 15+ yards on 135 carries. The 2023 and 2025 numbers show that in a stalled offense, his explosive rate collapses entirely.

Why it matters. Explosive-run rate captures a back's ability to turn cracks into big gains — a skill separate from volume. Hubbard's 2024 rate was nearly double his career norm; his 2025 shutout signals either scheme, blocking, or an offense that consistently stuffed runs at the second level.

His 2024 ceiling games — 153 yards vs NYG (W10) and 152 yards vs ARI (W16) — both came on workhorse usage (28 and 25 carries). The 2022 Detroit game is the freak outlier: 125 yards on just 12 carries as a part-time back, 10.4 yards per attempt.

Four of his five best single-game rushing performances came in 2024 — the breakout year is concentrated in a handful of games, not spread evenly.

Why it matters. Back-to-back 150-yard games separated by five weeks of NFL play shows a back who can sustain an elite ceiling, not just flash once. Both games came on 25+ carries, meaning Carolina trusted him to close out wins with volume.

He's added a receiving role year by year — quietly.

The rushing role narrowed in 2025, but the receiving role expanded: 3 receiving TDs in 2025 equals his receiving TDs across the entire 2021-2024 stretch (combined: 2). Carolina is using him as a check-down outlet for Young much more aggressively.

The pass-game role helps explain why his fantasy value stayed roughly stable even as the rushing numbers collapsed.

Why it matters. A running back who expands his receiving role as his rushing role shrinks has found a way to stay on the field. Hubbard's 3 receiving TDs in 2025 outpaced his previous four seasons combined, signaling a genuine role shift, not just garbage-time targets.
