Four Arizona years where he was a steady-but-unspectacular slot/outside hybrid. Then the move to Minnesota in 2023 unlocked the version of him that's now All-Pro-eligible. PDs jumped from 4 to 13 in one year. INTs went 0 to 3 to 6 in 2024 - tied with C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Marlon Humphrey for fourth-most by any DB.

The 2025 numbers (7 PDs, 2 INTs over 17 games) are a step back from the 2024 peak, but they reflect a coverage role that's gotten more zone-heavy. He's still racking up tackles (71 combined) - the highest count of his career.

6 INTs in 2024 - tied for 4th most by any defensive back in the league.

6 INTs is double his previous career high (3 in 2023, 4 in 2021). Only Kerby Joseph, McKinney, and Humphrey had more across the league - and Murphy did it on more PDs (14) than two of those three.

That 2024 ratio (6 INTs / 14 PDs = 43% conversion) is the ball-hawk profile scouts look for. Most CBs sit in the 15-25% range. Murphy converted at nearly 1-in-2.

Arizona Murphy vs Minnesota Murphy: the same player put up double the ball production.

Split

By stop, per-game rates

StopGPDsINTsPD/GINT/G
Arizona (2019-22)563450.610.089
Minnesota (2023-25)4734110.720.234

Same 34 PDs in 9 fewer games. More than double the INT rate (0.089 to 0.234 per game).

What changed: scheme, supporting cast, and where he was lined up. In Arizona he was a slot-corner generalist getting picked on by tight ends. In Brian Flores's Minnesota defense, he's playing more outside leverage, more press-bail, and getting safety help that allows him to trigger on the ball instead of recovering through the route. The defensive scheme around him is the headline; he's the beneficiary.

His 2024 INT total matches Marlon Humphrey's - and Humphrey is a perennial All-Pro.

C.J. Gardner-Johnson1712650.0%
Derek Stingley Jr.1718527.8%
Donte Jackson168562.5%

Among CBs with 5+ INTs in 2024, Murphy's 42.9% INT-per-PD conversion ranks above Stingley (27.8%) and right alongside Humphrey (40%). Even Donte Jackson's eye-popping 62.5% is across a much smaller volume (8 PDs vs. 14).

What the 2024 tape shows: Murphy isn't just near the football, he's catching it. That's the inflection that separates good cover corners from playmakers. The 2025 regression has been to the touch fewer footballs, but the catch-the-ones-you-touch trait stays.

2021 was his first 4-INT season - 11 other DBs had more, but his came on the worst Cardinals secondary in the league.

His 2021 4-INT season was largely overlooked because Arizona fell apart down the stretch and finished 11-6. But it was the leading indicator: Murphy was already showing the trigger-on-the-ball trait, just without the scheme around him to amplify it.

It took the Vikings two more years to give him the role. Once they did, the 4-INT version became a 6-INT version - and now the league has to plan around him.

He has played 17 games in 2025 - his first-ever full season.

Through six seasons he had played 86 of a possible 107 regular-season games - durable but not iron-man. 2025 is the first time he's played every game on the schedule.

The trade-off: he's at 48 solo + 23 assists through the full slate - matching his career-best tackle workload. He's playing more snaps in zone, finishing more tackles. The 2024 ball-hawk version isn't gone - the role around him just changed for a season.
