Vikings @ Lions

Week 8 · 2026

The lowest-scoring 6-0 team since 1999 needs its defense to stop the league's best passing offense.

The lowest-scoring 6-0 team since 1999 meets the best passing offense

Storyline

Minnesota is 6-0 with 125 points, the fewest through six games by any of the 35 teams to start 6-0 since 1999, and it has done it with defense: 74 points and six offensive touchdowns allowed, both the fewest in the league. Detroit is the mirror image: second in scoring at 30.7 points a game and 26th in points allowed at 27.5, with 22 offensive touchdowns scored and 22 allowed, the most per game in the league. Last week kept the shape, Minnesota beating Indianapolis 16-10 while allowing minus 0.299 expected points per dropback, second of the week (minus 0.148 across 2025), and Detroit beating Green Bay 20-17 with Jared Goff throwing for 303 yards and its passing at plus 0.279 per dropback (plus 0.168 across 2025). Minnesota won both meetings last season, 27-24 at Ford Field and 23-10 at home, ending a five-game Detroit run in the series, and Sunday asks whether the league's best pass defense can do it a third straight time to the league's best passing offense, in a dome where Detroit is 3-0 this season.

Why it matters. Minnesota has won six games while scoring like a bottom-ten offense, which means every win has rested on the defense holding opponents to 12.3 points a game. Detroit is the one opponent built to break that: first in passing efficiency and second in scoring, with a defense poor enough to keep any game open. Both of Minnesota's wins over Detroit last season came with the Lions held to 24 points or fewer, the same formula the Vikings have used all year.

Goff has 223 throws without an interception. Minnesota picks off the most

What to watch

Jared Goff has thrown 223 passes this season without an interception, the most by any passer through his team's first six games since 1999, three more than Drew Brees in 2018. Minnesota's defense intercepts passes more often than any other: seven interceptions on 198 dropbacks, first in the league by rate, three of them by Byron Murphy, after eight in all of 2025, 23rd. Goff's only game with two interceptions last season came in Minnesota in Week 17, a 23-10 loss in which Detroit's passing finished at minus 0.234 expected points per dropback; this season it is first of 32 at plus 0.295. If Minnesota intercepts Goff in the first half, Detroit has lost its cleanest number of the season and the game moves toward the Vikings' low-scoring script; if Goff reaches halftime clean, the league's best passing offense is playing its own game.

Why it matters. Detroit's offense has carried a defense that ranks 31st, and it has done so without giving the ball away through the air once. Minnesota's defense wins by producing short fields for an offense that kicks far more than it scores touchdowns, so a single takeaway is worth more to the Vikings than to almost anyone. The last time these two units met, Minnesota produced both of Goff's interceptions and Detroit scored 10 points.

Minnesota sacked Goff 10 times in two games last season. He has 12 in six

What to watch

The other way Minnesota beats a passer is by not letting him finish the play. Its defense has sacked opponents on 10.6 percent of dropbacks, first in the league, after 9.9 percent and second in 2025, and Dallas Turner has six sacks, tied for third, with 17 quarterback hits, tied for second. Detroit has allowed 12 sacks on 235 dropbacks this season, 5.1 percent, 11th, and only one against Green Bay last week, but Minnesota sacked Goff five times in each meeting last season. The Vikings have also gone three straight games without allowing a completion of 20 yards or more, after allowing seven in Week 1 against Green Bay. If Minnesota sacks Goff on one of Detroit's first two possessions, last season's meetings are repeating; if Goff is upright through the first quarter, Detroit's protection is winning the matchup Minnesota won twice last season.

Why it matters. Detroit's protection has kept Goff clean enough to post the league's best passing numbers, but the team that sacked him five times in each of last season's meetings is the one on the schedule Sunday. Minnesota's rush rate is higher than it was in 2025, and its coverage has allowed no 20-yard completion in three games. Both numbers are six-game samples, set against full 2025 seasons that pointed the same way.

Gibbs has 21 runs of 10 yards. He had none in 26 carries against Minnesota

What to watch

Jahmyr Gibbs is the Detroit player Minnesota's run defense has to answer: 620 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns, nine touchdowns in all, tied for the league lead, and 21 runs of 10 yards or more, second to James Cook's 22. Against Minnesota his line has swung hard. In the two 2024 meetings he ran 38 times for 255 yards and five touchdowns; in the two 2025 meetings he ran 26 times for 66 yards with no touchdowns and not one run of 10 yards. Minnesota's run defense allows minus 0.110 expected points per carry, fourth of 32, after fifth in 2025, while Detroit's run game sits 22nd at minus 0.087 despite Gibbs' yardage, and last week he carried 29 times for 116 yards against Green Bay. If Gibbs breaks a run of 10 yards in the first quarter, Minnesota is facing the 2024 version of this matchup; if Detroit's early carries keep stopping short, Goff is carrying the offense alone against the league's best pass defense.

Why it matters. Gibbs piles up yards and touchdowns while Detroit's run game ranks 22nd per carry, so his 10-yard runs are the difference between a ground game that works and one that stalls. Minnesota took those runs away entirely in 2025 and ranks fourth against the run again. If the Vikings repeat that, Detroit's offense narrows to Goff against a defense that leads the league in sack rate and interception rate.

Detroit allows the most 20-yard catches. Minnesota kicks the most field goals

What to watch

Minnesota's offense ranks 29th in expected points per play and has scored nine offensive touchdowns, 30th, but Will Reichard has made 18 of 19 field goals, 3.0 a game, the most in the league. Detroit's defense is where that could change: it allows 4.83 completions of 20 yards or more per game, the most in the league, after 3.41 and fourth most in 2025, and Green Bay hit six of them last week. Minnesota has struggled to take those shots, with 15 such completions in six games, 24th, five of them to Justin Jefferson, and its quarterbacks have been sacked on 9.9 percent of dropbacks, 30th, against a Detroit rush that ranks seventh, with five sacks each from Aidan Hutchinson and D.J. Wonnum. If Minnesota completes a 20-yard pass on one of its first two drives, Detroit's coverage is giving the Vikings a way to score touchdowns; if Minnesota's first trip inside the Detroit 20 ends with a Reichard kick, the Vikings are playing the 16-10 game again.

Why it matters. Minnesota has won by turning drives into field goals and trusting its defense, a formula that works until an opponent scores touchdowns. Detroit's defense gives up big passing plays more often than any team in the league, which is the cheapest route for a 29th-ranked offense to finish drives in the end zone. Detroit's rush is the counterweight, against a Minnesota line that ranks 30th in sack rate.
