Game recap
Giants @ Texans
2026 Wk 7 · HOU 21, NYG 27
Houston tied it with 57 seconds left; Devin Singletary's 30-yard overtime run won it for the Giants.
Singletary's 30-yard overtime touchdown run was the eighth overtime TD run of 30+ yards since 1999
RareHouston got the ball first in overtime and went three-and-out for zero yards. The Giants needed three plays to go 81 yards: a 9-yard throw to Malik Nabers, a 42-yard Cam Skattebo run up the middle, and a 30-yard Devin Singletary run up the middle for the touchdown at 7:33 of the extra period. Since 1999 there have been eight overtime touchdown runs of 30 or more yards. The one before this came against the Giants: Jahmyr Gibbs went 69 yards for Detroit in Week 12 of 2025. Houston was also on the losing end of one in 2006, when Vince Young scrambled 39 yards for Tennessee.

Why it matters. Under the regular-season overtime rule both teams get a possession, so Houston's three-and-out left the Giants needing only a field goal to win. Two straight runs of 30 or more yards up the middle made the field goal unnecessary. Long touchdown runs in overtime are rare because most extra-period drives play for field position; this was only the eighth of 30 or more yards in 28 seasons of play-by-play.
Fairbairn made field goals of 58 and 57 yards, the eighth two-kick game of 57+ since 1999. Zvada missed from 56 and 44
RareKa'imi Fairbairn's 58-yarder opened the scoring at 11:45 of the first quarter, and his 57-yarder at 9:08 of the second pulled Houston within 7-6. Since 1999 a kicker has made two field goals of 57 or more yards in one game eight times; Brandon Aubrey has three of them. Four of the eight kickers won and four lost, Fairbairn included. At the other end, Dominic Zvada missed wide right from 56 yards at 1:23 of the first quarter and wide right from 44 yards with three seconds left in the first half and the score tied at 14.

Why it matters. Houston's six first-half field goal points came from distances most teams punt from, which kept the Texans in a game the Giants out-gained them in by 221 yards to 144 before halftime. Zvada's 44-yard miss with three seconds left cost the Giants a halftime lead, and either of his two misses would have changed the math of a game that went to overtime tied at 21.
The Giants ran for 188 yards. Houston had allowed 106 or fewer in each of its first six games
ComparisonHouston's run defense held Buffalo, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Dallas, Tennessee and Jacksonville between 57 and 106 rushing yards. The Giants ran 34 times for 188, the most rushing yards Houston has allowed in any regular-season game since the start of 2025 and the most the Giants have gained in that span. Cam Skattebo carried 17 times for 124 yards, the first 100-yard rushing game of his career (his previous high was 98 against Philadelphia in 2025), and 42 of those yards came on the overtime run that set up the winning score.

Why it matters. Through six games no opponent had reached even 110 rushing yards against Houston. The Giants did it without a passing touchdown, and the gap was widest when it mattered most: 72 of the 188 yards came on two overtime carries. For a Giants offense breaking in a new starting quarterback, a run game that produced 82 yards more than Houston's previous 2026 high allowed was the steadier half of the attack.
Houston tied the game in the final minute of both halves, then went three-and-out in overtime
TrendHouston led only once, 3-0 in the first quarter. The Giants went up 14-6 on Jameis Winston's 1-yard run with 3:37 left in the half, and Houston answered with 39 seconds left: C.J. Stroud hit Marvin Harrison Jr. for 6 yards on third down and then found Cade Stover for the two-point conversion to tie it at 14. The same thing happened at the end of regulation. Skattebo's 16-yard run put the Giants up 21-14 at 9:03, and Houston drove 48 yards in nine plays for Stroud's 3-yard touchdown to Xavier Hutchinson with 57 seconds left. Houston's offense then ran three plays for zero yards in overtime.

Why it matters. Both of Houston's touchdowns came against the clock with the Giants ahead by seven or eight, and both came after Giants defensive help: the first-half drive was extended by two pass interference penalties on the Giants, and the fourth-quarter drive started at the New York 48 after a 14-yard Tank Dell punt return. Houston's offense managed 93 yards on 26 plays in the second half, so the comeback was built on short fields and timing rather than sustained play.
J.J. McCarthy's first Giants start produced the most passing yards of his career
MilestoneJaxson Dart and Jameis Winston threw every Giants pass in Weeks 1 through 5; McCarthy came on in relief of Winston in Week 6 and threw every Giants pass in Week 7. He finished 20 of 28 for 252 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions, and was sacked three times. The 252 yards top his previous best of 250, set for Minnesota against Dallas in 2025. Malik Nabers caught 7 of his 9 targets for 111 yards, including a 42-yard catch to the Houston 2 that set up the first touchdown.

Why it matters. McCarthy's 2025 games in Minnesota were defined by turnovers, with two interceptions in four of them. Here he threw none, completed 71 percent of his passes and leaned on Nabers and Malachi Fields (4 catches, 83 yards) for chunk gains while the run game carried the volume. The ceiling is the same as before, a 250-yard game, but it is the first of his four 240-yard games without an interception.
The Giants gained 221 yards in the first half and 118 in the second; Houston gained 144 and 93
SplitNew York's offense averaged 0.33 EPA a play before halftime and scored on two of its drives, with Zvada's two misses keeping it from more. After the break the Giants' passing game produced 50 net yards on 17 dropbacks, and the offense fell to -0.014 EPA a play, with Skattebo's 16-yard touchdown the only score. Houston never found an efficient half: -0.027 EPA a play in the first and -0.047 in the second. Then came overtime, where the Giants gained 81 yards on three plays and Houston gained none on three.

| HOU | Overtime | 3 | 1 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 0 | -0.861 |
Why it matters. The Giants' first-half edge was in the air: 173 net passing yards, built on Nabers' 42-yard catch and a 47-yard catch-and-run by Fields. Houston took that away after halftime, and the Giants won the game on the ground instead, with 140 of their 188 rushing yards coming after the break. Houston's offense was below zero in both halves, which is why its two touchdowns needed short fields and the final minute.
The Giants' first overtime win since 2021, and a sixth straight win over Houston
MilestoneBefore Sunday the Giants had gone 0-4-2 in overtime since beating New Orleans 27-21 in Week 4 of 2021, including a 27-27 tie at Washington two weeks earlier. They won this one by the same score as that 2021 game. The win also extends the series: Houston won the first meeting, 16-14 in 2002, and the Giants have won all six since, three of them in Houston.

Why it matters. Six overtime games without a win is a long run of near misses for one team: three of the four losses since the 2021 win were by three points, and the two ties were 20-20 and 27-27. Ending it against Houston keeps a lopsided interconference series lopsided. The teams have met every four years since 2002, and the Giants have not lost since that first meeting.
