Game recap

Buccaneers @ Cowboys

2026 Wk 5 · DAL 16, TB 24

Winless Tampa Bay broke its run of close losses with 17 straight points in the third quarter.

Four losses by 7 or fewer, then a win in Dallas: the second 0-4 start like it since 1999

Rare

Tampa Bay came into Arlington 0 and 4 without losing a game by more than a touchdown: 33-27 at Cincinnati, 23-19 to Cleveland, 23-16 to Minnesota, 17-14 to Green Bay. Since 1999, 86 teams have opened a season 0 and 4. Only two of them lost all four games by 7 points or fewer: the 2011 Vikings and this Buccaneers team. Both won their fifth game. It was also the first win for rookie Jalon Daniels in his second start; he went 19 of 25 for 189 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions.

Why it matters. An 0-4 record built from four one-score losses says more about late-game execution than about talent: Tampa Bay had been in every game and lost all of them. The fifth game broke that pattern in a familiar way for close losers, with a two-score lead built in one quarter and then defended. The only other team in the cohort, the 2011 Vikings, also won its fifth game, which is a two-team sample and not a trend, but it shows how rare this exact path to 0-4 is.

Down 10-7 at the half, Tampa Bay scored 17 points in the third quarter off a 72-yard run and two Dallas giveaways

Trend

Dallas scored first and led 10-7 at halftime on a 41-yard Brandon Aubrey field goal with 26 seconds left in the second quarter. On the first snap of the third quarter Bucky Irving ran 72 yards to the Dallas 14, and Emeka Egbuka scored on a 14-yard run on the next snap. Yaya Diaby then intercepted Dak Prescott at the Tampa Bay 24, and Irving finished the next drive with a 1-yard touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff Dallas fumbled the return and Tampa Bay recovered at the Dallas 37, which became a 41-yard Chase McLaughlin field goal. Three possessions, 17 points, a 24-10 lead. Dallas scored once more and was intercepted at the Tampa Bay 12 with 1:22 left.

Why it matters. The third quarter decided the game, and it was built on field position more than long drives: the 72-yard run put Tampa Bay at the 14, and the two giveaways handed it the ball at its own 24 and the Dallas 37. Dallas outscored Tampa Bay 16-7 in the other three quarters combined. The last interception mattered just as much, because it came with Dallas inside the Tampa Bay 25 and one score away from a tie.

Bucky Irving's 165 rushing yards: a career high and the fifth-biggest day by a Buccaneer since 1999

Milestone

Irving had 241 rushing yards on 56 carries through four games, 4.30 a carry. Against Dallas he ran 21 times for 165 yards and a touchdown, 7.86 a carry, and caught a 5-yard touchdown pass. His previous best was 152 against Carolina in 2024. The 72-yard run that opened the second half and a 22-yarder with 1:11 left account for 94 of the 165 yards; his eight carries off the left and right tackles produced 128. As a team Tampa Bay ran 37 times for 243 yards, its fifth-highest rushing total in a regular-season game since 1999.

Why it matters. Tampa Bay's run game had been producing 4.43 yards a carry as a team before this game, and Irving's own weeks had all been under 90 yards. The jump came against a Dallas front that had allowed 4.93 a carry in its first four games, and most of it came on two long runs to the outside, which is a sign of missed edge tackles more than steady push up the middle: his five carries at the guards gained 5 yards.

The second-least efficient offense of the first four weeks met the most generous defense, and played to Dallas's level

Comparison

Through Week 4, Tampa Bay's offense was averaging -0.154 EPA per play, second-worst in the league ahead of only the Chargers. Dallas's defense was allowing +0.201 per play, the worst mark of any defense. In this game Tampa Bay averaged +0.162 on 63 plays and 6.57 yards a carry, a swing of more than three tenths of a point per play from its own baseline. It still came in a little under what Dallas had been allowing, so this reads as an offense finding the soft spot in a struggling defense rather than a new identity.

Why it matters. Tampa Bay's four losses came with an offense that could not move the ball, so the fair question about this win is whether the offense changed or the opponent did. The numbers point mostly to the opponent: the +0.162 sits just below Dallas's +0.201 allowed average, and the gain is concentrated in the run game, where Dallas had already been giving up close to 5 yards a carry. That makes the next opponent the real test of whether Daniels and Irving have fixed anything.

Tampa Bay's third quarter: 197 yards at +0.80 EPA a play. Dallas's fourth: 161 yards and 6 points

Split

Tampa Bay ran 16 plays in the third quarter for 197 yards and seven first downs, +0.799 EPA per play, while Dallas's offense went to -0.706 in the same quarter with an interception. Dallas did its moving late: 18 fourth-quarter plays, 161 yards, eight first downs, +0.333 per play, all while chasing a 14-point deficit. Those yards produced one touchdown, a failed two-point try, and an interception at the Tampa Bay 12. Dallas threw on 43 of its 56 plays and ran 13 times for 50 yards; Tampa Bay ran it 37 times.

Why it matters. The two big quarters tell different stories. Tampa Bay's third quarter was efficient and short-field, and it built the lead. Dallas's fourth quarter was yardage against a defense protecting two scores, the kind of production that looks good per play but runs out of clock: a 14-point deficit needs two scoring drives, and Dallas got one. A 43-to-13 pass-to-run split shows how early Dallas gave up on the ground game once it fell behind.

Tampa Bay's third win in nine trips to Dallas since 2001, and the regular-season series now sits at 8-7 Dallas

Milestone

The teams have met 16 times since 2000, including Dallas's 31-14 Wild Card win in Tampa in the 2022 playoffs. In the regular season Dallas leads 8-7. In Dallas, Tampa Bay is 3-6, with wins in 2001, 2022, and now 2026. The 24 points tie the Buccaneers' most in any of those nine road games, matching their 24 in a 26-24 loss in 2024.

Why it matters. This has been a low-scoring series on Dallas's field: before this game Tampa Bay had never scored more than 24 there, and seven of its eight previous trips produced 20 or fewer. Winning in Dallas has usually required the Buccaneers' defense to carry the day, as in the 10-6 win in 2001 and the 19-3 opener in 2022. This one came with the offense doing more of the work, built on the ground.
