Game recap

Raiders @ Patriots

2026 Wk 5 · NE 45, LV 17

Drake Maye threw four touchdowns and ran for a fifth as New England snapped a three-game skid to the Raiders.

Four passing touchdowns, a rushing touchdown, 374 yards, no picks: the 10th such game since 1999

Rare

Drake Maye went 26 of 34 for 374 yards and four touchdowns without an interception, then ran in a fifth score from 3 yards out in the third quarter. Since 1999 a passer has put together 4+ touchdown passes, a rushing touchdown, zero interceptions and 350+ passing yards in a regular-season game only 10 times, and this is the first since Justin Herbert in Week 5 of 2021. The Raiders were on the wrong end of three of the 10: Aaron Rodgers in 2019, Tom Brady in 2020, and now Maye.

4+ TD passes, 1+ rushing TD, 0 INT, 350+ passing yards, regular season 1999-2026

Why it matters. Big passing days usually carry a cost in turnovers or come from a quarterback who leaves the short scores to his backs; this line has neither. Maye took one sack, threw no interceptions, and finished both through the air and on the ground, which is why the cohort is so thin across 28 seasons. It is also the second time in his career he has accounted for five touchdowns in a game, after five passing scores against the Jets in Week 17 of 2025.

Maye had 4 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in his first four games; then 4 and 0 in one afternoon

Comparison

Through four weeks Maye had completed 73 of 117 passes for 854 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions, with 10 sacks taken. Against the Raiders he threw for 374 yards, 44% of his previous four-game total, on 26 of 34 passing with four touchdowns, no interceptions and one sack. New England's offense moved from -0.253 EPA per play in Week 3 to +0.191 in Week 4 and +0.423 here, its best game of the season by a wide margin.

Why it matters. The interceptions had been the story of New England's 2-2 start: seven in four games, three of them in the Week 1 loss. Two straight clean weeks in the sack column (one each against Buffalo and the Raiders, after three in each of the first three games) line up with the jump in efficiency, which points to protection as part of the turnaround rather than only Maye's decisions. One game does not reset a season, but the last two weeks are the first time this offense has posted positive EPA per play in 2026.

8.57 yards a play: New England's fifth-best rate in 442 regular-season games since 1999

Anomaly

New England gained 540 yards on 63 pass and run plays. Across every Patriots regular-season game since 1999, 442 in all, only four produced more yards per play, and all four came between 2007 and 2013. The run game carried its share: Rhamondre Stevenson (13 carries, 64 yards), Corey Kiner (6 for 52) and TreVeyon Henderson (4 for 22) behind Maye's 374 passing yards.

Why it matters. Yards per play strips out pace and possession count, so it isolates how hard a defense was to move against. The four Patriots games above this one all came with Tom Brady at quarterback in the franchise's peak offensive years. New England also scored touchdowns on 4 of its 16 red-zone plays and lost only one turnover, a Kiner fumble, so the yardage turned into points rather than stalled drives.

45 points ends a three-game skid against the Raiders, by the widest margin in the series since 1999

Milestone

The Raiders had won the last three meetings, including a 20-13 win in Foxborough to open the 2025 season. This 28-point win is New England's largest margin over the Raiders in any meeting since 1999, ahead of 33-8 in 2017 (25 points) and 49-26 in 2008 (23). It is also the Patriots' first 45-point game since a 50-10 win over Jacksonville in Week 17 of 2021.

Why it matters. The Raiders' three straight wins in the series had all come by seven points or fewer, so the matchup had been close as well as one-sided in results. A 28-point answer resets that, and it came against the same opponent that beat Maye in his 2025 opener, when he threw 46 passes for 287 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The 45 points also break a four-season gap since the Patriots last hit that mark.

Tied 7-7 in the first quarter, New England scored the next 21 points while the Raiders wasted a takeaway

Trend

Brock Bowers' 13-yard touchdown catch tied the game at 7 with 8:24 left in the first quarter. The Raiders then got their best chance to take the lead: a Kiner fumble at the New England 38 with 4:33 left in the half and the score 14-7. The drive ended with a 49-yard Matt Gay field goal attempt that hit the left upright. New England went down the field and scored on an 11-yard Maye pass to Hunter Henry with 28 seconds left, and opened the third quarter with a 34-yard touchdown to Kyle Williams for 28-7. The Raiders' next real threat also ended without points: Bowers caught a 15-yard pass at the New England 36 down 35-10 and fumbled, and Craig Woodson recovered.

Why it matters. The game turned in the last five minutes of the first half. A Raiders field goal off the Kiner fumble would have made it 14-10; instead the miss handed New England the ball, and the Henry touchdown plus the Williams touchdown on the first possession of the second half made it a 21-point game in 2 minutes 24 seconds of game clock. Bowers finished with 8 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown, but both of the Raiders' chances to change the game's direction ended without points.

The third quarter decided it: New England +0.652 EPA a play, the Raiders -0.607

Split

The Raiders matched New England early, at +0.333 EPA per play in the first quarter on Bowers' touchdown drive. The third quarter was the widest gap of the game: New England ran 19 plays for 208 yards at +0.652 per play and scored 14 points, while the Raiders managed 51 yards on 11 plays at -0.607 and a field goal. The Raiders' best offensive quarter by yardage, 128 yards in the fourth, came after New England had built a 35-10 lead through three quarters.

Why it matters. New England's efficiency came in two bursts, the first and third quarters, and those are the quarters where it scored 28 of its 45 points. The Raiders' offense was close to even overall (-0.018 EPA per play for the game), but its worst quarter came right after halftime, trailing 21-7. By the time the Raiders' offense moved the ball again in the fourth quarter, the gap was 25 points.
