Game recap
Vikings @ Buccaneers
2026 Wk 3 · TB 16, MIN 23
An 86-yard punt return and two 54-plus field goals carried Minnesota past a Tampa offense sacked six times.
Minnesota won on 2 of 16 third downs, tied for the third-lowest conversion rate by a winning team since 1999.

Only one winning team since 1999 has done worse on 15 or more third downs: the 2009 Chiefs, who went 1 of 15 against the Raiders. Minnesota's average third down needed 10.0 yards, and 11 of its 16 were 7 yards or longer. The two teams combined for 5 conversions on 33 third downs, the 12th game since 1999 with at least 30 third downs and 5 or fewer conversions, and the first since 2023.
Why it matters. A team that converts one third down in eight normally loses because its drives end in punts, and Minnesota punted eight times. The Vikings won anyway because their scoring did not run through sustained drives: a punt return touchdown, a 41-yard third-down strike to Addison, and three field goals of 43 yards or longer. That profile is not repeatable week to week, so the number reads as a warning about the offense rather than a footnote to the win.
Myles Price's 86-yard punt return is Minnesota's first punt return touchdown since 2016, and ties for the second-longest by a Viking since 1999.

Eleven punt return touchdowns in 28 seasons, and five of them belong to Marcus Sherels. Price fielded Riley Dixon's 41-yard punt at the Minnesota 14 with 9:00 left in the first quarter and the Vikings up 3-0, and the return made it 10-0. Only Nate Burleson's 91-yarder in 2004 went longer for the franchise in that span. The final margin was 7 points.
Why it matters. The return was worth the whole margin. Both offenses finished below minus 0.24 EPA per play, so the one play that did not involve either offense decided a game the scoreboard otherwise had even. It also ended a drought: Minnesota had gone nine full seasons, 2017 through 2025, without returning a punt for a score, and Sherels was the last Viking to do it.
The third quarter: 29 offensive snaps, 53 yards and one field goal from the two teams combined.

The first half produced 326 yards and 27 points. The third quarter produced 53 yards, two first downs, a Kyler Murray interception and a Chase McLaughlin field goal. Minnesota's third quarter alone was 13 plays for 25 yards at minus 0.909 EPA per play; Tampa Bay's was 16 plays for 28 yards at minus 0.601. Both offenses were near break-even in the first half and both fell below minus 0.48 per play after it.
Why it matters. When both offenses collapse at the same time, the read is usually the defenses winning adjustments rather than one team going conservative with a lead, and Minnesota's lead was only 7 at the half. Tampa Bay's second-half success rate of 15.2 percent is the number that ended the game: four of Mayfield's six sacks came after halftime, and the Buccaneers' 33 second-half snaps produced 70 yards. Minnesota's own second half was nearly as bad, which is why it needed 54 and 56-yard field goals rather than touchdowns to hold on.
Baker Mayfield was sacked six times. Tampa Bay allowed 38 sacks in all of 2025, a little over two a game.

Tampa Bay sat mid-pack in pass protection last season at 2.24 sacks allowed per game. Through three games in 2026 it has allowed 4, 3 and 6, or 13 in total. This was the fifth game of Mayfield's career with six or more sacks taken, and the first since Week 3 of 2024 against Denver. Minnesota's defense has 4, 4 and 6 sacks in its three games.
Why it matters. Six sacks against an offense that allowed about two a game last season points at the matchup rather than a chronic protection problem, and Minnesota's pass rush is the mechanism: 14 sacks in three games. Four of the six came in the second half, when Tampa Bay's offense fell to minus 0.489 EPA per play, so the sacks are the cause of the collapse in the split card, not a separate story. Mayfield's three worst sack games have all come against defenses that also picked him off, and this one fits the pattern with one interception.
Minnesota's second win in Tampa in eight visits since 1999, and its sixth 3-0 start in that span.

Before this game Minnesota had won once in Tampa since 1999, a 19-13 game in 2014, and had lost the other six by an average of 16 points. Tampa Bay leads the overall series since 1999 by 10 games to 6. The 3-0 start comes with 41 points allowed, the third-fewest of Minnesota's six 3-0 starts in that span, behind the 30 allowed in 2024 and the 40 allowed in 2016. Tampa Bay is 0-3 for the sixth time since 1999, after 2004, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2014.
Why it matters. The road record in Tampa is the more telling number because it is small and lopsided: seven previous trips, one win, and most of the losses were not close. A 3-0 start built on 41 points allowed says the defense is carrying this team, which matches the offense's minus 0.264 EPA per play in this game. Of Minnesota's previous five 3-0 starts since 1999, only the 2024 and 2016 teams allowed fewer points through three weeks.
Tampa Bay never led, but got within a point with 9:06 left. Minnesota answered with a 56-yard field goal and two interceptions.

Tampa Bay's best position all game was tied at 10 with 5:35 left in the first half, and its worst was down 10. After McLaughlin's 54-yarder cut it to 17-16, Minnesota went 4th and 16 at the Tampa 38 and Reichard hit from 56. Mayfield's answer ended on 4th and 13 with an Andrew Van Ginkel interception at 1:54, Reichard added a 43-yarder at 0:37, and Jalon Daniels' last-play heave was picked off by Isaiah Rodgers at the Minnesota 3.
Why it matters. This was a game with no lead changes that still came down to two possessions in the final four minutes, and Minnesota closed it without an offensive touchdown after the second quarter. The 56-yard kick with a one-point lead turned a one-score game into a two-score problem for a Tampa Bay offense that had 70 second-half yards, and the two fourth-down interceptions were the direct result: Tampa Bay had to throw into coverage on 4th and 13 and then on the final snap. Reichard is now 21 of 26 from 50 yards or longer in his regular-season career.
Reichard hit from 54 and 56. Two makes of 54 or more by one kicker in one game has happened 15 times since the start of 2025, and 28 times in the 26 seasons before that.

Nothing like this existed for most of the database: 1999 through 2019 produced 13 such kicker-games in 21 seasons. 2024 alone had 6, 2025 had 13, and 2026 has 2 through Week 3, one of them Reichard's and the other in Tampa Bay's Week 1 game in Cincinnati. Reichard's shortest make of the day was 43 yards, and he is 21 of 26 from 50 or longer in his regular-season career.
Why it matters. Minnesota scored 9 of its 23 points on kicks of 43, 54 and 56 yards, and the two long ones came in a game where its offense converted two third downs. Field goals from 54 and beyond used to be a once-a-season event for a franchise; the 2025 spike means coaches now send the kicker out from the 38 on 4th and 16 with a one-point lead, which is exactly what Kevin O'Connell did. The comparison cuts both ways: a range that was a rarity is becoming a standard weapon, so Reichard's day is remarkable within the game and routine within the era.
