2026 Wk 3 · DEN 30, LA 26
Shut out for a half, Denver scored 30 after the break and went ahead for good with 48 seconds left.
Talanoa Hufanga's 66 yard interception return is one of five fourth quarter pick sixes since 1999 to turn a deficit into a lead.

Denver trailed 19-16 with 5:01 left when Hufanga stepped in front of a short pass meant for Kyren Williams and went 66 yards the other way. That is the complete list of fourth quarter interception returns of 60 or more yards since 1999 where the defense trailed before the snap and led after the six points. Four of the five teams went on to win. Hufanga then ended the game with a second interception, this one in the end zone with two seconds left.
Why it matters. A pick six is worth roughly two possessions of swing: it takes away a drive that was moving and puts seven on the board with no time used. Doing it while trailing in the fourth quarter is the rarest version, because most long returns come with a lead already in hand. Hufanga did it against a quarterback who finished with 390 passing yards, which is what made the Rams' yardage edge worthless.
Denver went 30 minutes without a point, scored 30 in the next 30, and took the lead for good with 48 seconds left.

Los Angeles led 16-0 at halftime and Denver had missed a 43 yard field goal in the first quarter. The Broncos went for two after both third quarter touchdowns and converted both, which is why the game was tied 16-16 rather than 16-14 when the fourth quarter began. From there the lead changed hands three times in the final 5:01. The winning drive survived an interception that was nullified by a pass interference call on the same defender, and a touchdown run that replay moved back to the 1 yard line.
Why it matters. The two point decisions are the quiet hinge of this game. Kicking twice would have left Denver at 16-14 and turned the Hufanga return into a 21-19 lead, so every later score would have carried different math. Sean Payton's aggression in the third quarter bought his team the margin it needed to absorb a 48 yard touchdown pass with under four minutes left and still win on a touchdown rather than needing more.
The Rams' offense was worth plus 0.227 EPA a play before halftime and minus 0.260 after it.

Los Angeles ran 45 offensive plays in the first half to Denver's 21 and outgained the Broncos 273 to 67. After halftime the Rams' per play value fell by almost half a point and their success rate dropped seven points, while Denver's rose from 28.6 percent to 43.9 percent. Seven of Denver's 30 second half points came from the defense on Hufanga's return; the other 23 came from an offense that had produced nothing before the break.
Why it matters. A half to half swing of this size is usually about adjustments rather than talent, and the direction here favors Denver's staff: the Rams' second half sample is 35 plays, big enough that the collapse is not one bad drive. The 45 to 21 play count in the first half also matters. Los Angeles had the ball most of that half and converted it into 16 points, three of them field goals, which left the door open for a team that had not yet done anything.
Los Angeles outgained Denver by 221 yards and lost. The Rams have done that only five other times since 1999.

Matthew Stafford went 30 of 55 for 390 yards, Davante Adams caught 7 of 13 targets for 137 yards, and the Rams ran 18 more plays than Denver. The two interceptions are the whole story: one was returned for seven points, the other ended the game in the end zone. Denver's 261 yards is the most any of those six opponents gained; the other five all won with fewer than 215.
Why it matters. Yardage and points diverge when drives end in field goals and turnovers, and this game had both: four Rams drives ended in Mevis kicks and two ended in Hufanga's hands. Outgaining an opponent by 200 yards and losing has happened to this franchise about once every four or five seasons, so it is a genuine outlier rather than a trend. The turnover margin, minus one, is small, but the second interception was returned for a touchdown, which is the most expensive kind.
The least penalized team in the NFL last season took 13 penalties in Denver, tying its most in a game since 2017.

Los Angeles committed 75 penalties across 17 regular season games in 2025, fewest in the league by a clear margin, and never had more than 8 in a game. Denver drew 13 flags against them for 91 yards while committing 5 of its own. Three of the Rams' penalties came on Denver's winning drive inside the Los Angeles 11 yard line, including the pass interference that erased Josh Wallace's interception with 1:15 to play.
Why it matters. Discipline was a structural edge for the 2025 Rams, and it vanished in a single afternoon. The timing is what made it decisive: penalties on the winning drive did not just move the ball, one of them gave back a turnover that would have ended the game with Los Angeles ahead. Whether this is a one game blip or a sign of a thinner secondary is the question the next few weeks answer.
Denver's first win over the Rams since 2002, ending a five game losing streak in a series that meets about once every four years.

Eight meetings since 1999, and the Rams had won six of them, including the last five in a row. The 2000 through 2014 games were played while the franchise was based in St. Louis; the database carries them under the LA code. The last meeting before this one was a 51-14 Rams win on Christmas Day 2022. Denver's previous win in the series came in the 2002 season opener, also at home.
Why it matters. Interconference series are short and infrequent, so a five game streak spans 16 years and several eras of both rosters. The streak itself says little about these two teams, but the way it ended does: Denver won a game it trailed by 16 at halftime, a week after beating Jacksonville and two weeks after losing by 21 at Kansas City. For a team that went 14-3 a year ago, that is the kind of result that steadies a 2-1 start.
